Ulaanbaatar City Travel Guide: Mongolian Greatness
Ulaanbaatar (aka Ulan Bator), Mongolia is one underrated Asian city if you’re interested in mingling with the girls after you do some exploring and regular travel stuff in Mongolia’s capital.
Mongolian women are a special breed, and you can meet some incredible ones in this mid-sized city.
While Ulaanbaatar won’t leave you wanting to stay for months on end (at least that was my case), you can definitely enjoy your time here for 2-4 weeks.
I definitely did.
So here’s a quick breakdown of this unique place.
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: Quick Facts
Population: Roughly 1.5 million people. Nearly half of the country lives in Ulaanbaatar, which is also the capital.
Weather: Cold. Really, really cold. Below freezing is fairly common here. I only suggest visiting this city during the months of May through September.
With close proximity to Russia, the winters here are brutal. June and July are typically great months for travel.
Safety: Fighting is beyond common, especially when Mongolians are drunk. However, you won’t have much else to worry about here. Murders and armed robbery are beyond rare.
And if you practice common sense and don’t do any crazy or stupid things, chances of getting into a fight are minimal.
I’m talking about males here – women should be on the much safer side as I never heard about women fighting in Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar Travel Tips & Information
MUSTS: If you’re traveling through Mongolia, you absolutely must spend one night in a yurt or ger.
Just get on Airbnb and look for one to rent for a night. There are many just outside of Ulaanbaatar that offer a unique cultural experience and are fairly cheap.
I wouldn’t personally spend more time there, but one night is truly worth it!
Apartment Prices: Ulaanbaatar apartment rentals are fairly cheap. You can find a one-bedroom in the city center between $450-900 USD on Airbnb in the summer.
Nightly rates seem to run between $25-40 per night in a good location with solid amenities.
Hostel Dorm Prices: While I don’t recommend hostels, the going rate seems to be $7-8 per night.
Nightlife in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
So, you want to meet some nice Mongolian girls? Well, you’ll need some luck – in regards to safety.
Hitting on the wrong girl at the wrong time could definitely result in fights with Mongolian guys while out at night drinking.
You can still meet some fine girls in Mongolia at night – but it takes a little more tact than in other Asian countries, where men can be more laid back.
Still, you should definitely venture out and check out the nightlife while in Ulaanbaatar. I did, and I lived to tell the tale. Here are a few spots I recommend:
- Great Khan Irish Bar: This should be your start to nearly every night out in Ulaanbaatar. The place is foreigner-friendly and giant. The chicks here are friendly as can be and the location is quite convenient. I was quite a fan, as this is my favorite bar in the city.
- New Mass Club
- Face Club
- Metropolis
- Price of a Beer: $2.5-7 USD
Online Dating in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
I’ll keep this one simple. If you’re looking to meet Mongolian women in Ulaanbaatar – Tinder and Asian Dating are your absolute best friend. Swipe/message as many as possible and try to go on as many dates as possible.
The best strategy, especially with Asian Dating (since you can create an account and start messaging girls before getting there), would be to create your account and start interacting at least two weeks before getting to Ulaanbaatar.
You’ll need it to guarantee you get at least a date during a short trip – but it’s the right approach even for longer spells in the city.

Chance of Hooking Up in Ulaanbaatar: 7.5/10
This isn’t Thailand. This isn’t the Philippines. This isn’t Jakarta. You won’t have a guarantee here.
However, if you have a decent Asian Dating profile, any experience with women, and around two weeks in Ulaanbaatar (or before getting there) – you shouldn’t have any issues dating Mongolian women as a Western man.
More Information About Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Language Barrier: There is a language barrier, but no one expects you to speak Mongolian as a Westerner.
Maybe learn “hello” or “please” and “thank you” if you plan to stay more than a month. I didn’t, but most of the people I met knew at least some English. So don’t worry about it.
Work Available?: Yes, there is a little, but I wouldn’t recommend looking for it. You really don’t want to live here in the winters. It’s just not worth it, unless you really dig cold weather.
Bachelor Budget Needed: $1,400 – $2,100 a month
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Conclusion
I had a great time in the city for the time I spent there, but I was ready to head out after that. While the city itself is really nice and offers a lot – more than just when it comes to dating, although that was my main goal – it wasn’t a city that ticked with me.
The city is a lot of fun for 1-4 weeks, but not a place to base up long term imho. Meet some girls in Mongolia here and stay safe – then get out.
The one fun part of living in Ulaanbaatar is that there aren’t many foreigners around, so the spot feels off the beaten path.
