Sri Lanka’s high season is between December and March when the best weather hits the country’s southern and western regions.

Temperatures range between 29°C and 31°C all year round in Sri Lanka, but low rates of rainfall between December and March mean that skies remain clear and the ground stays dry during this time.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with rugged mountain ranges, lush forests, and rolling grasslands. When the weather is dry, there’s less chance of cloud and fog hampering your views when you head into the countryside to explore.

Popular destinations such as Colombo, Negombo, Kalutara and Bentota on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka attract large volumes of visitors during the high season.

The dry, hot weather is perfect for lounging on the beach or beside the pool. Holiday resorts are popular here because they provide a luxurious, relaxing experience compared to staying in hotels in Sri Lanka’s urban areas.

Best months for watching wildlife

High temperatures and dry conditions between February and April mean that wildlife in Sri Lanka begins to gather around watering holes.

It’s easy to spot the likes of elephants, buffalos and leopards at this time of year when you visit Sri Lanka’s safari parks.

Yala National Park is one of the best places to see Sri Lankan wildlife. It’s home to 44 species of mammal and 215 species of bird across its 130,000 hectares of forest, scrubland, grassland, and lagoons.

For a lusher environment, head to Sinharaja Forest Reserve which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.

It’s the last viable area of tropical forest left in Sri Lanka and many of the flora and fauna here are incredibly rare. The landscape is beautiful with peaceful waterfalls, babbling pools, and a lush, dense canopy.

This is a particularly good area for birdwatching, but you’ll also see a huge variety of butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

Best months for budget travel in the north and east

The low season in Sri Lanka is between May and August when the country experiences high rates of rainfall.

The Yala monsoon begins in May and affects the western and southern regions the most before moving through Hill Country by August.

You can often find cheap rates at this time of year as most tourists don’t want to spend their trip getting soaked in downpours.

If you’re working with a tight budget, this is a great time to visit Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern areas. Jaffna, a green, leafy city on the northern coastline, is a popular destination with plenty of historical and cultural attractions to explore.

Resorts on the southeast coast, such as Arugam Bay, offer fairly cheap rates at this time of year despite being spared from the worst of the rainy weather.

It’s also a great time to visit Hill Country, which is the central mountainous region of Sri Lanka. It’s an excellent area for hiking, particularly when the weather is neither too hot nor too damp

September is a popular time to visit Minneriya National Park to see “The Gathering”. This is where around 200 wild elephants group together for several weeks at a time.

An ancient reservoir here recedes between the months of July and November and lush green grass grows in its place. The elephants gather to feed, bathe, socialize and mate in a phenomenon that has taken place for hundreds of years.
