15 Most Romantic Cities in the US to Visit in 2025

Romance is personal and you can discover it in exotic locales or the neighborhood grocery store. But there are still some places that provide an escape from the ordinary and simply ARE more romantic.

This is what we’re talking about today: the 15 most romantic cities in the US in 2025. We’re focusing on the larger, better-known destinations today, and not those small, off-the-beaten-path ones, because it’s best to begin with the best, most popular options and take it from there later.

Sure, I’ve covered smaller, yet charming places in my previous article sharing the best US cities for digital nomads – but now we’re focusing on romance.

No matter if you’re planning a surprise getaway for your significant other, organizing a wedding or any sort of anniversary, daydreaming about future trips, or simply planning to see an amazing city, this list is for you. So without further ado, let’s dive in!

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston NC

An historical jewel located in the Southeastern US, Charleston offers a warm climate throughout the year.

The heat and humidity peak during the summer months but this can translate into great deals – and the romantic vibe remains even during the warmer, soggier months.

This coastal city is located at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The scent of the ocean and salt marshes hits one in the face upon arrival. The smell of sweet jasmine and magnolia blooms permeate.

A horse drawn carriage tour throughout the city offers an up-close history lesson. Fort Sumter looms in the harbor. The Civil War’s first shots were fired at this national monument.

In other words, a great place to explore and discover with your partner. You will fall in love, again and again, here – not just with the city, but your partner as well.

Must-try for couples:

Insider tip: Spring and early fall offer perfect weather and blooming gardens (check out this amazing Magnolia Plantation tour if you can). Don’t miss a boat tour to Fort Sumter for a dose of history, or sunset at The Watch rooftop bar.

Where to stay:

The Vendue, Downtown Art Hotel: Sip wine together at the daily art reception before enjoying rooftop cocktails and nightly milk-and-cookies turn-down service. A creative, cozy hideaway for couples right in the heart of Charleston.

Hotel Emeline: Share a leisurely Italian brunch in the garden, unwind by the outdoor fireplace, and explore Charleston’s historic beauty just steps from your elegant room.

The Pinch Charleston: Relax with a couples’ spa treatment, savor fresh seafood on the candlelit terrace, and wander hand-in-hand through Charleston’s charming city center just outside your door.

2. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah Georgia

Savannah, Georgia, is a city that whispers romance with every cobblestone, every amazing square, and every moss-draped oak – or even stairs, as you can see in the photo above, taken in the historic center.

Actually, the historic district is a patchwork of 22 verdant squares interspersed with antebellum mansions and charming row houses, plenty of green spaces and everything you need to feel romance flowing in the air.

Lovers can stroll hand-in-hand along the Savannah River promenade, on the River Street, exploring boutiques, galleries, and eateries housed in centuries-old cotton warehouses, for example.

Savannah’s culinary scene is actually an important facet of its romantic allure. The city is a gastronomic delight, offering a plethora of dining options that range from traditional Southern fare to innovative fusion cuisine.

Must-try for couples:

Extra detail: If you’re visiting in spring, the city is in bloom and evenings are made for riverfront walks or hidden courtyard bars. Try the Artillery Bar for great cocktails in a historic building.

Where to stay:

Andaz Savannah: Unwind by the pool after exploring riverfront boutiques, then toast your evening with handcrafted cocktails and a city-view balcony. Perfect for couples who love modern comfort in the heart of the city.

Hotel Bardo Savannah: Indulge in spa treatments, yoga classes, and gourmet breakfasts before strolling together through lush gardens and savoring world-class service, steps away from Forsyth Park.

Olde Harbour Inn: Share complimentary wine and cheese each evening as you watch the river flow by, then retreat to your cozy historic suite for a truly timeless Savannah escape.

3. Key West, Florida

Key West Port aerial view

Key West is the southernmost city within the contiguous US. It is 160 miles from the Miami airport and 106 water miles from Havana, Cuba. Its climate is tropical and steady with pleasant weather all year long.

Tropical sunsets, lively streets, and an “anything goes” attitude – Key West is made for couples looking to unwind. Start at Duval Street for local art, live music, and sample pink shrimp, conch delicacies, and stone crab. They headline most menus, and for all the right reasons!

Mallory Square is the place to view the sunset in Key West – among the finest in the US, and you should know that weddings are popular as the sun goes down over this majestic place – in case you get any ideas, that is!

Must-try for couples:

Where to stay:

Silver Palms Inn: Start your day with a poolside breakfast, then enjoy your private balcony and a peaceful stroll to Key West’s historic sights – all from this cozy, budget-friendly retreat.

Simonton Court Historic Inn & Cottages: Swim together in one of four serene pools or unwind on your private patio at this adults-only oasis just steps away from lively Duval Street.

Almond Tree Inn – Adults Only: Relax in the hot tub, enjoy complimentary happy hour drinks by the pool, and walk hand-in-hand to Key West’s most iconic attractions, all in a quiet setting.

4. Napa Valley, California

napa valley

Napa Valley is a wine lover’s paradise, with raw natural beauty on the offer too. It’s a bit pricier than most places on this list – but in the end, when it comes to true romance, we can splurge a bit every now and then.

From the grandeur of opulent estates like Castello di Amorosa, a 13th-century Tuscan castle replica, to the intimate tastings at boutique wineries like Frog’s Leap (marking it on Google Maps for you here), Napa Valley caters to every palate and preference.

The region’s natural beauty, from its undulating vineyards to its serene redwood forests, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

There’s more than just wine tastings here: think hot air balloon rides, spa days, and slow mornings with vineyard views. No matter what you choose, Napa Valley invites you to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

Perfection, especially when you have the right person close to you.

Must-try for couples:

  • Schedule a sunrise hot air balloon ride for a memory that lasts.
  • Try a wine tasting experience to get in the mood for later (as if that’s needed!)
  • Book a table at The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil: ask for a terrace seat overlooking the valley.

Where to stay:

Vino Blanco: Enjoy sunset mountain views from your private deck, then uncork a bottle together in this spacious, modern hideaway, perfectly positioned for wine country adventures.

Warm Springs Paradise: Soak in the outdoor hot tub under the stars and unwind by the fireplace – an adults-only escape where every detail is designed for relaxation and romance.

5. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Nantucket view
Nearby Nantucket is amazing too.

Close proximity to Boston and Logan Airport makes this an easy getaway, and I know I’m cheating a bit by including an area instead of a city – but you can literally pick any place there and be satisfied.

Enjoy a cup of clam or scallop chowder in front of the fire and also enjoy the slower pace of the entire area. This is a place perfect for meditation and long, nice talks with your significant other.

A rich maritime history influences the harbor towns from Sandwich to Providence. It is a great launching spot for nearby Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. The latter is a summer favorite of the Clinton and Obama families, so you know you’re going to be treated well there.

Must-try for couples:

  • Share chowder and oysters at a harbor-side shack (The Lobster Pot in Provincetown is a local legend).
  • Wander Provincetown’s art galleries or take a Margarita Sunset Cruise from Hyannis.
  • Explore lighthouses and windswept beaches together (Race Point Beach at sunset is pure magic and offers plenty of privacy)

Where to stay:

Snug Cottage: Start your morning with a cozy breakfast by the fireplace, then stroll hand-in-hand to Provincetown Harbor from this charming, historic bed & breakfast.

Admiral’s Landing: Relax in your private spa bath or enjoy a glass of wine on the sun terrace. This is an intimate adults-only retreat just steps from Provincetown’s waterfront.

Captain Farris House: Share afternoon tea in the tranquil garden or unwind in your fireplace suite, all just moments from Cape Cod’s best beaches and ferry adventures.

6. Kaua’i, Hawaii

Kaua’i, often referred to as the “Garden Isle,” is a lush playground for nature lovers. Beaches cover 50 miles of the Pacific in Kauai. It’s actually one of the best beaches in Hawaii and a must see spot, in my opinion.

This is Hawaii’s best island for couples who want privacy, adventure, and jaw-dropping scenery. There’s no shortage of postcard-perfect beaches, but what sets Kaua’i apart is the mix of wild nature and true relaxation.

It is an ideal place for a private retreat, as it is easy to escape the commercialism of the larger islands of Hawaii. The climate is tropical, but rain is likely; however, with the great weather all year round, it won’t be a real problem. Plus, it gives you an extra excuse to cozy up in your bungalow or spa.

What truly sets Kaua’i apart and makes it an amazing romantic destination in the USA, is its commitment to conservation. The island is home to numerous endangered species and ecosystems, and there’s a strong emphasis on sustainable tourism.

Must-try for couples:

  • Hike the Kalalau Trail for unmatched ocean and cliff views.
  • Book a helicopter tour to see the island’s hidden waterfalls.
  • Go for a sunset dinner at Tidepools, where tables are set over koi ponds.

7. Northern California Coast

Again, not a city – but you will understand me for including this on the list. A trip down Highway 101 in Northern California is a romantic mecca, with plenty of suitable cities for a romantic getaway – and this is why I decided against selecting a particular one.

For example, the Avenue of the Giants has some of the world’s largest and oldest trees. It provides a unique experience for a couple desiring solitude.

The Sonoma area is home to the nation’s finest vineyards and tasting rooms. It has something to offer to all wine lovers out there. Bed and breakfasts and fine cuisine welcome the romantic travelers.

Must-try for couples:

  • Stay at a boutique inn with ocean views in Mendocino.
  • Sample wine in small Sonoma Valley tasting rooms: no crowds, just charm.
  • Pack a picnic and stop at Glass Beach, famous for its sea-polished glass pebbles.

Tip: Plan your trip for September or October when the fog lifts and sunsets are dazzling. The new “Coast Redwoods Art Walk” launched in 2025 offers public art installations all along the route, great for couples’ selfies.

And if all this travel got you in the mood for starting a new life together with your partner, why not check out my article detailing the most beautiful cheap cities in the US to live in?

8. Big Sur, California

We’re sticking to the California area, but this time with a more targeted recommendation: Big Sur. This is a place where the raw power of nature takes center stage, showing dramatic and often breathtaking views and, as expected, natural beauty.

It’s a rugged stretch of California’s central coast, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise dramatically from the Pacific Ocean, offering some amazing view spots, truly Instagramable locations and plenty of secluded beaches to enjoy with your partner.

The iconic Highway 1, which snakes its way along the coastline, offers panoramic views of the ocean, the mountains, and the sky that are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

All in all, I would say that Big Sur offers a sense of peace and tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere. It’s a place that reminds us of our place in the grand scheme of things, a place that’s as profound as it is beautiful.

Must-try for couples:

  • Book a stay at the Alila Ventana for the ultimate couples’ getaway – outdoor tubs, wood fires, and views you’ll never forget.
  • Stop for a sunset picnic at Garrapata State Park or take a hike to McWay Falls.
  • Visit Nepenthe for lunch, where the patio overlooks the Pacific.

9. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a city that effortlessly blends natural beauty with a vibrant arts scene.

It’s probably not the first destination that comes to mind when you think about romantic places in the US, but trust me that it is a good one – and a trip here will prove you that I am right.

With it’s best spot in the River Arts District, where former industrial buildings have been transformed into studios and art galleries, showcasing the work of hundreds of artists, Asheville is a city that breathes art.

Yet, Asheville’s allure extends beyond its arts scene. The city is a gateway to the great outdoors, with a myriad of hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic drives at its doorstep.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, often referred to as “America’s Favorite Drive,” offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, while the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park beckons with its diverse flora and fauna. Mixing the outdoors with the local art is definitely romantic!

Must-try for couples:

  • The Biltmore Estate: tour the mansion, picnic in the gardens, and/or join a wine tasting.
  • A couples’ spa treatment at Shoji Spa or a soak in the city’s historic hot springs.
  • Catch a sunrise from the Blue Ridge Parkway, or explore waterfalls in Pisgah National Forest.

10. New Orleans, Louisiana

The city’s historic French Quarter, with its Spanish colonial architecture and lively street life, is a proof of the many influences it has, from European (French and Spanish) to African and Caribbean.

The sound of jazz spills out from clubs and bars, while the tantalizing aroma of Creole and Cajun cuisine wafts from restaurants and street food stalls, creating an atmosphere that’s as romantic, alluring and amazing at the same time.

Must-try for couples:

  • Take a carriage ride at twilight for a new perspective on the Quarter.
  • Join a couples’ cooking class, or taste your way through a po’ boy crawl.
  • Try the new rooftop bars popping up in the Warehouse District for cocktails with a view.

Note: Mardi Gras is wild and fun, but not for every couple; late spring or early winter is quieter and just as magical if you want to avoid the festival.

11. San Francisco, California

San Francisco has a way of turning ordinary moments into something special, whether you’re sipping coffee in North Beach or taking in the city lights from a hilltop park.

The Golden Gate Bridge makes for a postcard-perfect backdrop, but the real magic is in the city’s little surprises: a cable car ride at dusk, fresh oysters at the Ferry Building, or stumbling onto a jazz trio playing in a hidden alley.

For couples:

  • Walk hand-in-hand through the winding trails of Lands End, where the views stretch across the Pacific and the bridge frames every photo.
  • Have a sunset picnic at Alamo Square, with the Painted Ladies and the city skyline just beyond your blanket.
  • Book a private table at a classic restaurant like Gary Danko or slip into an intimate speakeasy in The Mission.

Tip: Take the ferry to Sausalito for a quieter afternoon by the bay, or plan your visit in early spring when cherry blossoms brighten the city’s parks. For a less crowded Golden Gate view, Baker Beach is a great choice.

12. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona feels almost otherworldly, with its towering red rock formations glowing in the sunset and a peaceful energy that slows you down. This is the place for couples who want a mix of adventure and relaxation – whether you’re hiking, soaking in a spa, or just watching the stars light up the desert sky.

For couples:

  • Book a couple’s massage at one of the town’s famous wellness retreats. Many have private patios looking straight onto the red rocks.
  • Hike Cathedral Rock at golden hour for views that feel straight out of a movie.
  • Explore local art galleries, then wind down with a glass of Arizona wine at a patio bar as the sun dips behind the mesas.
  • Join a stargazing tour: Sedona is a certified Dark Sky Community, so the night sky is something you won’t forget. Spring and fall are the best seasons, with perfect hiking weather and blooming wildflowers.

13. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe blends centuries-old history with a creative spirit that’s unlike anywhere else in the country. Strolling the adobe-lined streets, you’ll find hidden courtyards, cozy cafés, and art everywhere, from massive galleries to breathtaking murals.

For couples:

  • Wander through the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum or one of the dozens of artist studios on Canyon Road.
  • Try a cooking class focused on Southwestern flavors, perfect for food-loving couples who want to take a taste of New Mexico home.
  • Spend an evening at Ten Thousand Waves, a Japanese-style mountain spa with private hot tubs nestled in the pines.

14. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago’s energy is contagious, and the city’s skyline looks especially romantic reflected in Lake Michigan at dusk. From rooftop lounges to riverside walks, this is a city built for couples who love a big-city vibe mixed with a little old-school glamour.

For couples:

  • Take an architecture boat tour on the river. At sunset, the city glows in gold and blue.
  • Grab tickets for jazz at the Green Mill, a club with history dating back to Al Capone’s days.
  • Stroll the lakefront trail, then share deep-dish pizza in Lincoln Park or dine with skyline views at Cindy’s Rooftop.

Tip: If you’re visiting in summer, don’t miss the fireworks at Navy Pier on Wednesday and Saturday nights. In winter, Millennium Park’s ice rink makes for a classic date.

15. Maui, Hawaii

Maui is the island dreamers imagine: endless beaches, gentle surf, and sunsets so vivid they don’t look real. The island is famous for honeymoons, but it’s just as perfect for couples looking to recharge, try something new together, or just disappear for a few days.

For couples:

  • Drive the Road to Hana, stopping at waterfalls, black sand beaches, and tiny fruit stands along the way.
  • Watch the sunrise from the top of Haleakala volcano. Yes, it means an early wakeup, but it’s unforgettable.
  • Take a snorkeling or whale-watching tour together (in season), or book a private table at Mama’s Fish House for dinner right on the sand.

Final words

Traveling with a loved one turns any city into a romantic escape. These destinations just make it even easier. Whether you want to propose, rekindle, or simply relax, there’s something here for every couple in the US.
