What Are Finnish Women Like? [Full Guide]

Finnish women are gorgeous, smart, and usually successful. What else? In this article, I am giving you the ultimate insider’s look into the world of dating and relationships in Finland.

All the details, all the tiny little things, all the hot tips to help you score a Finnish beauty, plus what to expect once you do.

Main traits of Finnish Women

We’re going to talk about the typical Finnish woman, so that you can easily understand them and be able to get under their skin knowing everything about them.

Silence Is Gold, Small Talk Is Ugh

Small talk is a sort of national sport for Americans (says the non-American who is writing this article) but Finnish women are not exactly keen on it.

Their silence is very awkward at first and the lack of chit-chat can be just weird. But the thing is, once you get used to it (should not take too long, you are an adaptable guy), not engaging in the mindless small talk we usually do on dates is actually the best.

If you talk, you have a real, genuine conversation.

The connection is where it’s at. If you stay silent, you get some serious tension going. Or, if there isn’t any chemistry or tension, you sit there awkwardly but you know right off the bat that things will not work out.

No time-wasting, no stupid conversations about that show everybody is watching or how weird the weather has been lately. It does not sound so bad when you think about it, right?

It’s not a huge difference between the women living in Finald and the girls there (the latter being obviously younger, but still adult) but if you want to get more in depth with this – with a focus on the dating aspect, make sure to read my guide about Finnish Girls.

They Are Very Private (Unless You Ask The Right Questions)

finnish women

Finnish women don’t enjoy sharing personal details on the first few dates. They are cautious with strangers to an extent that you rarely ever see in the West.

There are multiple reasons for that, most of them having to do with the Finnish national character.

Much like small talk is not appreciated, oversharing would be a red flag for her if you do it too much. She just won’t.

There is a way around this that does not involve just chatting about your respective jobs. Instead of asking questions all the time (we are told that is what makes a good conversationalist, right?), try to get her to share opinions.

How would you do that?

By sharing yours first. Make statements.

Say you are at a restaurant. You could do something like ‘Why is it that everything even remotely healthy on the menu always tastes awful?’ To which she would probably react by disagreeing.

And there you have it, a full-on conversation that does not make her uncomfortable but still allows for some tension. Playful arguments are one of the best conversation techniques to use on Finnish women.

Don’t always try to go for these somewhat confrontational approaches. Nobody likes a bully or a person that disagrees with everything! But be creative when talking to her – this is the key to impressing a Finnish Woman!

Being a Minority Is Actually Great

Finland is a country of rich tall white people, yet surprisingly being brown or black is an advantage in the dating game.

Finns have this very pronounced liberal guilt over once discriminating against minorities.

There is also the refugee crisis which most people don’t feel is being handled fairly so – even more guilt over their privilege.

Black and brown men get a larger margin of error because Finnish women overcompensate for that guilt (which I think is being installed in society by the media).

If you are an ethnic man, don’t be afraid to approach girls and don’t think you would get more rejections for the colour of your skin. In fact, you might actually get more girls than your non-minority friends.

This doesn’t mean that regular white men won’t stand a chance. No, everybody comes with almost equal chances in Finland and there are surely enough women for all men out there.

But foreigners and guys who don’t look like the typical Finnish man will generally get an advantage because they are seen as exotic or just… something else!

Finnish Women Look Russian (But Don’t Act Russian)

Beautiful Blonde Finnish Woman

Finnish women look incredibly Eastern European (by the way, check out the best dating sites in Eastern Europe here.)

Compared to other girls in Scandinavia, they are even blonder, slimmer, and fairer.

You know, scratch slimmer actually! There are a lot of skinny runway models that come from Finland but the national average is not on the slim side.

Finland has been dealing with some serious obesity problems in recent years. They have been handling it well, more or less, with a lot of community exercise and nutrition education programs happening throughout the country.

However, there are still a lot of obese people (which obviously includes obese girls). Kind of makes sense, since Finnish Cuisine is great!

Don’t go in expecting a nation of heroic chic women, that is all I am saying. You will still be very pleased with their looks – I can guarantee that!

Even though Finnish women look almost Slavic, they don’t exactly share all the values and the mindset of, say, Russian girls.

Finland is a very rich and well-developed country where most women almost frown upon the idea of just being housewives.

There is a lot expected from a girl and that starts at a very young age – girls are expected to perform great at school, get into a good uni, become independent and provide for themselves as soon as they are out of college etc. Family values have been taking a back seat in recent years.

That being said, Finns put a lot of value on maintaining good relationships.

Even though they tend to get married later on in life now, Finnish women are still looking for a long-term partner rather than a casual hook-up buddy. In that sense, yes, they kind of think like Eastern Europeans but not totally.

The dating period before marriage is virtually the same as in any other country in the West so don’t expect to just find a bride there.

However, going online is always a good choice, with more and more Finnish women switching over to the world wide web to search for their match.

It’s just easier that way, saves up for some lost time and pointless conversations. And if things work right, they will move on to meeting you in the real world.

Nowadays, you can find a lot of English-speaking Finnish women (most of them speak great English, actually) over on this website. This makes it a lot easier and less awkward to find somebody, for both parties involved.

Tell Her About Your Summer

finnish women

You know where Finland is, right?

They get awfully long winters that much up north. Summer is short and sunny days are very few.

That is a part of the reason why so many Finns suffer from depression, which often starts as season affective disorder that…well, when the season that affects you lasts for the most part of the year, I guess it kind of turns into a full-blown depression. But so much for mental disorders.

Yes, Finland’s capital is great and you have a lot of awesome things to do in Helsinki, but you will rarely find a Finnish woman that doesn’t want a bit more sun in her life.

Spending at least a week (but usually more like 10 days to two weeks) at a sunny, tourist-y beach resort is the rule for Finnish people. It is not seen as treating yourself but rather as a necessity.

If you come from somewhere where you had the beach and nice weather almost year-round you would be surprised at how much she loves to hear that.

That is one form of turning the weather conversation into something a bit more personal.

Tell her about home, about where you liked to go as a kid, how you would spend your summers etc. You will find it impresses her more than how successful you are.

I’m telling you, there is nothing as valuable as a sunny day for Finnish women.

And also, if you are in Finland while the weather is good definitely ask her out to a picnic. There is virtually 0% chance that she would turn that down.

They Don’t Dress Out Of A Skrillex Video

Contrary to what we are led to believe, Finnish women are not all hipsters / androgynous fashion aficionados.

Most of them really enjoy doing hair and makeup and they dress quite feminine. It is true that most people (as in, not just most girls) embrace wearing comfortable clothes. There is nothing wrong with that, really.

You have to prioritize staying warm when you live in that climate. Other than that, Finnish girls do love to show off their curves, to look put together, to attract guy’s looks on the street. Maybe not to the extent that Latinas do but they are still pretty close.

Day Game With Finnish Women Is Hit-Or-Miss

This would depend on how good you are at day game in the first place, of course, but generally speaking, you are much better off trying at night.

It is true that Finnish clubs can get really expensive (the living standard here is very high, even compared to the States or to the more developed European countries). The good thing is that local men hardly ever approach girls.

Your chance to stand out is to simply try. No girl likes to be forced to make the first move but you would notice that Finnish women are masters of the ‘getting you to come over’ game. Glances, smiles, winks, you name it, she will do it if she likes you.

Speaking of clubs, buying drinks for girls is not really that popular out here.

Even if she wants to flirt/make out/hook up with you, she might not accept the drink offer.

Two reasons for that: safety and attachment to equality. First off, a lot of girls have been led to almost fear guys. women are still extra cautious here.

Nobody would like to get roofied in the club, right?

Secondly, Finnish women are all about independence.

They enjoy the occasional act of chivalry but actually buying drinks (or anything that is not a gift for her birthday) for her would make her uncomfortable.

This is one of the reasons why we actually recommend going the online route when it comes to meeting a charming a Finnish lady. It’s just how things are over there!

Finally, They Are Not As Scary As They Look

Granted, Finnish women are very attractive but they are also friendlier than you think. Fear not to approach them!

The worst that could happen is you being rejected. But they will never do it in a rude way or make you feel uncomfortable.

Finnish women are definitely a special kind and despite the cold climate around them, they are warm and nice to be around with.

They are not the easiest to impress and getting under their skin takes time and dedication, but once you’re there, you will really appreciate it! You can also check out my guide to men in Finland to know what you’re generally up against.

So this would be all that I had to share, based on my personal experiences, about Finnish women. Anything extra to add? Let us know by commenting below!

  1. If you live long enough in Finland you will miss a real woman. Issues, lack of sense of humour, insecure women, heavy drinkers, tomboys….

  2. “Black and brown men get a larger margin of error because Finnish women overcompensate for that guilt (which I think is being installed in society by the media).”

    Salty much?

  3. “The good thing is that local men hardly ever approach girls. ”

Yes we know why: feminism, maskuline behaviour, alcohol…

Go to Russias Saint Petersburg if you want real woman which look like a model and act like women normally do.

  4. Mina on Amerikan Suomilaiset.

Very shy at first. The woman always has to indicate interest first. I like beer, lots of kalja! Sauna is a must, makkarra and all. Blue-eyed, very blonde, tall, a hunnuri soite. Lakes and woods, fishing rods and guns, politics all part of me. University educated, common sense, flannel shirts, blue jeans and work boots.

How would I fare in Suomi?

  5. I have met some Finish men in Riga, Latvia. They were roaring drunk and obnoxious as alcohol in Latvia is cheap compared to Finland.

Also I have fished a lot in Astoria, Oregon and found them to be unfriendly when I asked a few Finish fishermen how was the fishing, they would not answer my questions and started to talk in their Finish language.

The women are aloof and somewhat boring, maybe some conceit? The Russian ladies were fun, great sense of humor, well put together and down to earth. The Fins are somewhat cold like their country.
